JACK GAVE THE LIGHTHOUSE SOME serious side eye when they arrived at the location an hour later. He wasn’t keen to get too close, although he was determined to be Ivy’s overprotective shadow at the same time since they had no idea what they were dealing with.

“How many people has this building eaten throughout the years?” he asked as he leaned against the front of Jared’s truck, arms crossed.

“None that we know of,” Jared replied. He kept one eye on Harper as she checked the equipment that had been left to monitor the structure and his other eye on Zander, who was busy practicing what looked to be some sort of speech. “What are you doing?” he demanded after several seconds of watching, causing Zander to snap up his head.

“Who says I’m doing anything?” Zander shot back.

“You’re talking to yourself.”

“No, I’m practicing my wedding speech.”

Jared cocked his head “I’m no expert, having only been through it once, but last time I checked the happy couple aren’t the ones who make the speeches at the wedding. That’s the best man and matron of honor.”

“Yes, well, I like to be different.” Zander sent him a serene smile. “I’m totally going to give a great speech. It’s going to be like magic.”

“Whatever.” Jared turned back to Jack. “Harper has had trouble tracking down the history of the lighthouse. She’s been looking on message boards online, but all she’s found there are random stories that can’t be confirmed.”

“Yeah, that’s the problem with stuff like that,” Jack agreed, tilting his head when he saw Harper and Ivy approach the lighthouse. “They’re not going inside, right?”

Jared swished his lips. “I don’t think so but keep an eye on them. Harper is dying to get inside. Normally I wouldn’t be worried, but this feels different from the other cases I’ve watched her solve. It feels more … ominous.”

“Because you think the building is eating people?”

Jared choked on a laugh. “Are you going to turn this into a thing, like the cat trying to kill you?”

“That cat is trying to kill me.” Jack was deathly serious. “He now crawls on my face every night and cuts off my airway. I wake to a big mouth of cat fur and then he digs his claws in when I try to dislodge him.”

“Maybe that’s his way of telling you he loves you.”

“Yeah, I’m a hundred percent positive that’s not it.”

“What will you do? I mean … Ivy is going to choose the cat, right?”

Jack glared at his friend. “Keep it up and I’m going to tell Zander you want him to use you as a test audience for his wedding speech. Is that how you want to play it?”

Jared immediately started shaking his head. “Obviously the cat is evil. I don’t know what I was thinking.”

“I thought you would see things my way.”
